I want to become an apprentice to a chef?

Matt asked:

I am really interested in the culinary world and have dreams of becoming a chef. I’m only 17 years old and now is the time I think I should become an apprentice. Does anyone have any pointers of how to get this position? I mean.. do i just call up a resturant or hotel and ask the chef if I could come in and help cook? It just seems odd. Also what can I expect on the first day in the kitchen? I have no prior experience in this. Thanks!

Read Kitchen Confidential by Anthony Bourdain. Entry level kitchen jobs are usually dishwashing jobs. Just go to restaurants, country clubs, hotels and see if one is open. Consider culinary school if you’re serious about cooking.

Apply at every restaurant within walking distance of your home. Some Guy is right, your gonna wash pots but that’s the best place to start.
Still in school? Learn a little Spanish. The job is easier when you can talk to your coworkers.
    Good Luck!

Everyone is correct when they say you must start at the bottom, however do not be discouraged at the money they say you will make.
This might be true for restaurants but if you want to make some decent money and get the most chances for advancement I suggest you try a hotel. Once again you would start as a dishwasher but once you get to a cook level you will make much more money than what is mentioned.

We place people in hotels all across the country and the minimum amount ever offered was ten dollars per hour and the average being thirteen dollars per hour and as high as 15.50 for entry level cooks.

If your passion is cooking and not afraid to work hard you should excel very quickly.
